Statue of Grand Duchess Charlotte

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Luxembourg, The Capital disguised as a village
A brief comment on the statue you see in the centre of the square. It represents Grand Duchess Charlotte. A relatively unknown heroine with a strong character who deserves to be remembered! She wasn’t destined to end up on the throne of Luxembourg, but sometimes fate changes its mind and young Charlotte became Grand Duchess in 1919. Exiled during World War II, she refused Germany’s offer to return to Luxembourg and left to join De Gaulle and Churchill in London. She even met Roosevelt several times to convince him to join the war. From London, she fuelled many centres of resistance, and General de Gaulle often praised her eloquence and courage. In Luxembourg, she is the symbol of the Resistance! At the end of the war in 1945, the Grand Duchess finally returned home. She embarked on a major tour to visit Luxembourgers and was warmly applauded wherever she went.
