Jacob Tower

08 la tour jacob luxembourg poi petit

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Luxembourg, The Capital disguised as a village

The impressive gateway on your left is the Jacob Tower, also known as the Dinselpuert. It was part of the 15th-century Wenceslas Wall. Back then, it was truly imposing, with its drawbridge, moat and top-floor artillery casemate. The new wall was named after the Duke of Wenceslas, who governed Luxembourg at the time of its construction. It protected the inhabitants of the valley and made it possible to integrate both the lower town and the raised Rham plateau into the fortifications. The wall had 37 towers and 15 gates. The Jacob Gate was one of the main entrances to the east of the town, and an entry tax was levied on passers-by. Don’t worry, those days are gone!
