Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Luxembourg, The Capital disguised as a village

This is the entrance to the notorious Casemates of Bock. They are Luxembourg City’s most famous attraction, bringing in over 100,000 visitors a year! The casemates have been on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1994. So what is a casemate? It’s an incredible underground network carved out of rock! Imagine that every time the fortress of Luxembourg passed into the hands of new occupants, they did everything in their power to improve its defensive system and avoid it being stolen by others! The casemates were built under the Spanish in 1644, then improved by the Austrians. At the time, there were 1,500 square metres of tunnels capable of housing just as many soldiers and cannons! It was at this time that Luxembourg acquired its nickname of the Gibraltar of the North! Very popular during World War II, they also provided shelter for thousands of people! Only 17 kilometres remain after the fortress was dismantled. To explore this mythical place and enter into the depths of history, you have to pay an entrance fee.
