Sternenplatz

Sternenplatz may be small, but it’s an absolute must-see, and it won’t take you long to see why! One of the most striking features of Lucerne is its tradition of painted façades, with some of its most beautiful examples right here. The custom of decorating houses with murals goes back to the Middle Ages, though most of the artworks you’ll see today were painted in the 19th and 20th centuries. This square has existed since 1259, and the five streets that meet here inspired its name — Sternenplatz, or Star Square. The mural above the Fritschi restaurant depicts the energy and chaos of Lucerne’s Carnival, especially during the final parade, when all the marching bands roam the streets one last time, playing the “Monster Concert”—a wild burst of sound to chase away winter and welcome spring. Directly across the square stands a striking Gothic-style municipal building, also adorned with a vibrant mural. This four-storey structure, complete with overhanging turrets, has become a symbol of the city. Built in the 16th century, it combines a private residence above a restaurant — the Stadtkeller, open since 1876! Every winter for the past forty years, the venue has come alive with rock, pop, jazz, blues, and stand-up comedy. In summer, it becomes a stage for traditional Swiss music. It’s the perfect place to discover the alpine horn, yodelling, and enjoy locally brewed beer—served by staff dressed in traditional costumes.
