Hotel des Balances

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Lucerne, The land of dragons
As you exit Weinmarkt Square, you’ll come face to face with a stunning painted façade, belonging to the Hotel des Balances. The fresco was painted in the style of Hans Holbein, a Renaissance artist best known for his portrait of Henry VIII. Above the entrance, you can read the words Hotel Waage, the building’s former name. Waage means “scale” in German, referring to the scales of justice, since this building once housed the local court. From here, take Metzgerrainle Street on your right, then turn right again into Kramgasse, to reach our next stop on Mühlenplatz.
