The statue in front of you is almost 4 metres high and impossible to ignore. An iconic figure in England and a World War II hero, this world-famous statesman has an extremely rich history. Winston Churchill entered the British Parliament at just 26 years of age, he became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1940 and took an outspoken stance in the global conflict, leading to victory in 1945. Here, he is displayed on an imposing bronze statue, his hand resting on his cane, facing Big Ben and the Westminster Palace. It was his wife, Baroness Spencer-Churchill, who unveiled the statue on November 1, 1973, in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II. It was Churchill who requested that the statue be placed here in Parliament Square, renovated in the 1950s. Many other famous faces can also be seen here, as 12 statues have been installed, including those of Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela and Gandhi. Don’t hesitate to take a stroll around to admire them.
