You are now on Millennium Bridge, which allows you to cross the Thames to reach the Southwark district. If you’re a Harry Potter fan, this bridge might ring a bell! Indeed, it appears in the sixth part of the famous saga, where it is attacked by the notorious Death Eaters… Now, let’s get back to reality: the Millennium Bridge was inaugurated in 2000, but it was only open to the public for 2 days! The reason for this was that its designer, who was none other than Norman Foster, one of the leading exponents of high-tech architecture, had not foreseen that the bridge would start to sway under the weight of the many people crossing it. Rest assured, he quickly put in place a shock-absorbing system to solve the problem, which today allows people to cross the Thames in complete safety! Nevertheless, the bridge kept its reputation and was nicknamed the Wobbly Bridge. Crossing this bridge gives you a breathtaking view of the Tate Modern, one of the capital’s most famous museums, which displays works by the greatest British and international artists. Behind you is the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, proudly overlooking the City of London, and in the distance you can see the impressive Tower Bridge and the towers of the Westminster Palace. This offers a great overview of this part of London!
