Globe Theatre of Shakespeare

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit London, The City
The building on your right is called the Globe Theatre of Shakespeare because this is where Shakespeare wrote and staged his greatest works, which are known all over the world. The first theatre here was built in 1599 as a performance space for Shakespeare’s company. However, a few years later, a fire broke out during a performance and destroyed the theatre. It was rebuilt the following year, but with the Puritans in power, who considered theatres to be places of vice, it was closed and demolished in 1644. It was not until 1970, three centuries later, that an American producer decided to raise funds to launch the construction of a new building in tribute to the famous British playwright. The new theatre would be rebuilt identically, using the same construction methods and materials as in the past! Take a look at the walls: they are supported by a mixture of sand, lime and goat’s hair! Bricks, thatch, sand and oak were all that was needed to build the roof. The only difference with the previous theatre is that here, the roof has been fitted with a fire protection system. As for the performances inside the theatre, the idea is the same: no lighting, no sound system, just actors playing in the same conditions as they did back then! What you see here is a fine tribute to William Shakespeare!
