Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Lisbon, The City of Seven Hills
What’s with this striking tower in the heart of the Baixa district? It looks a bit like the Eiffel Tower, doesn’t it? Well, actually, it’s an elevator, linking the Baixa with the Chiado district, yet another of the city’s famous neighborhoods. Pretty handy, right? It’s a great way for locals to quickly get from the lower to the upper town! After all, it’s no coincidence that Lisbon is called the “City of Seven Hills” – walking around here is quite a workout! And that’s precisely why, in 1900, they decided to build an elevator to link two of the city’s busiest districts, much to the relief of the locals. But let’s get back to its architecture. It was built in wrought iron, at a time when iron was used as an artistic medium. It’s neo-Gothic style is vaguely reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower. The project was undertaken by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, who is said to have been one of Gustave Eiffel’s students! Makes perfect sense now, doesn’t it? After a long day of sightseeing, you should definitely treat yourself to a ride on this elevator. The view from the top is amazing and your feet will thank you!
