Baixa district

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Lisbon, The City of Seven Hills
It was the Marquis de Pombal who brought the Baixa district back to life after the catastrophic earthquake of 1755. He had buildings constructed in the neo-classical “Pombaline” style and organized in a grid plan that gave the district a very linear look. Not even the street names were left to chance, each named after a particular trade! You’ll find Gold Street, Silver Street, Shoemakers Street, Gilders Street and so on… That is to say, back then, you could find what you were looking for in a flash. Need gold? Head to Gold Street. Shoes? Shoemaker’s Street. Simple as that! Today, the Baixa district is arguably one of Lisbon’s liveliest neighborhoods, popular with visitors and locals alike.
