This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Le Havre, The Ocean Gateway
This house-museum offers a fascinating glimpse into life in 18th-century Le Havre, with beautifully preserved rooms reflecting the architecture, décor, and refined atmosphere of an elegant bourgeois home of the time.
It tells the story of Martin-Pierre Foäche, a wealthy merchant who lived here from the late 1700s to the early 1800s. He had his home decorated by Pierre-Adrien Pâris, who was then the official designer for the royal cabinet.
Built from Caen stone, the house features a neoclassical façade that is a perfect example of the Louis XVI style. A true historical gem, the Shipowner’s House takes you on a journey back in time, offering a vivid picture of what Le Havre was like when powerful merchants shaped the city and turned its port into one of the largest in France.
