Saint-Vincent-de-Paul Church
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Le Havre, The Ocean Gateway
This beautiful Neo-Romanesque church dates back to the 19th century, located only a stone’s throw away from Le Havre’s beach.
It’s a fine example of traditional Norman church architecture, showcasing a 59-metre high lantern tower. The project was launched by Abbé Beaupel, who saw the need for a new place of worship as the population in this part of the city began to grow.
Look above the entrance and you’ll spot something quite unusual, the words Liberty, Equality, Fraternity carved into the stone. It’s one of the very few churches in France to display the national motto.
This rare detail is thanks to the church’s relatively late construction, compared to most other churches across the country.
A key landmark in the Saint-Vincent neighbourhood, the church originally stood outside the city’s old fortifications in the 19th century.
