Towers viewpoint

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit La Rochelle, The White City
This view takes your breath away, doesn’t it? From this viewpoint, you can contemplate the ocean stretching as far as the eye can see to your left, as well as the town’s three towers, bearing witness to its past as a fortified town from the 12th century onwards. The white tower in front of you is the Lantern Tower, a medieval lighthouse used to disarm ships entering the port. The smallest tower known as the Chaîne Tower dates back to the end of the 14th century and was used to monitor traffic in the port. Last but not least is the Saint-Nicolas tower on the far right, a reminder of the city’s power and wealth. Boats enter and leave the Old Port via this route, still guarded by the imposing towers.
