The Big Clock Gate

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit La Rochelle, The White City
The Big Clock Gate, which marks the boundary between the Old Port and the old town, is one of the city’s most iconic monuments, and certainly one of its oldest. You can’t miss it ! In the past, this imposing gateway was divided into two lanes, one for pedestrians and the other for carriages. It was built at the beginning of the 14th century to reinforce the city’s protection and prevent intrusions. From the 15th century onwards, residents requested the city council to enable them to always keep track of time. To make this possible, the council decided to install a clock on the gateway, which earned it the name Big Clock Gateway. If you look closely, you’ll see its ship-shaped weathervane, the hallmark of this authentic port town.
