Saint-Sauveur church

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit La Rochelle, The White City
This 12th-century church was built by the monks of Aix Island, a small pedestrian island off the coast of La Rochelle. Its history has been full of ups and downs: it was destroyed by fire in 1419, then a century and a half later by Protestants from La Rochelle. The church was rebuilt a third time, only to be burnt down again, leaving only the portal unscathed. However, despite countless setbacks, the bell tower is still of medieval origin!
