Saint-Nicolas Tower

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit La Rochelle, The White City
We are standing at the foot of Saint Nicolas Tower, the oldest in La Rochelle. A true symbol of the city’s sovereignty. Its construction is the subject of a very special legend: apparently, the tower’s creator was none other than the fairy Mélusine, who flew over La Rochelle with the ruins of a destroyed castle and caused all the stones to fall, piling them one on top of the other and eventually forming the tower… Do you think this is true? Anyway, the tower protected the town from enemy attacks for a long time, and now offers a panoramic view of La Rochelle from its summit, making it a popular spot for visitors! The only drawback, if I may say so, is that, like the Tower of Pisa, it leans slightly to one side… However, that’s what ultimately gives it its charm, isn’t it?
