Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit La Rochelle, The White City

So, while we’re here, in the peace and quiet of Charruyer Park, I’d like to give you a little more background on the history of La Rochelle. A city was only established here at the end of Antiquity and the beginning of the Middle Ages, on the former marshes that made up the area. A first port was built not far from here, along the little stream known as Lafond stream, which can still be seen today in the park! Throughout the Middle Ages, the town grew and it beacme necessary to built a bigger port: the Old Port of La Rochelle was born! Originally a simple fishing village, the town, which was then called Rupella, became a prosperous city where wine, salt, textiles and cloth trading earned it a major role in the region. Until the 15th century, it even had the most important port in France. However, because of its success, the town suffered greatly from the many conflicts that marked France’s history, notably the Hundred Years’ War in the 15th century, the Wars of Religion in the 16th and 17th centuries and the two World Wars. It was the last town in France to be liberated from German occupation in 1945! Nowadays, La Rochelle has become a very popular tourist destination, thanks to its ideal location on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, the Ré island and the famous Fort Boyard. Every year, it attracts thousands of visitors who come to discover its history!
