St Joseph’s Church

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Krakow, The Jewish Quarter
Welcome to the magnificent St Joseph’s Church, a striking example of neo-Gothic architecture. You might be surprised to find such a grand Christian church in the heart of Kraków’s former Jewish quarter—but before the ghetto was established during World War II, Jews and Catholics lived side by side here. The first Church of St Joseph was built back in 1832, but by the end of the 19th century, the congregation had grown so large that a larger church was needed. The result is the impressive structure you see today. Its design is inspired by Vistula–Baltic Gothic style, a Polish version of the medieval brick Gothic style. Its main tower is reminiscent of St Mary’s Basilica’s north tower, which you may have seen in the historic centre. Construction took five years, and the new church was inaugurated in 1909. Today, it’s considered one of the most beautiful neo-Gothic churches in Poland, listed as a historic monument. You’re welcome to step inside and explore, but for now, let your attention rest on what you see before you.
