Süleymaniye Mosque courtyard

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Istanbul, from Byzantium to Constantinople, an empire on two continents
Welcome to the Süleymaniye Mosque courtyard. Here, you’ll find a colonnade crowned with 28 domes resting on 24 antique columns. Right in the center, there’s a small white marble structure. It’s a sadirvan, a special fountain used for ablutions. The mosque itself boasts four minarets and ten balconies, commemorating Suleiman as the fourth Ottoman sultan after the conquest of Constantinople and the dynasty’s tenth ruler. You can also see his mausoleum in the cemetery in front of the mosque. It’s the octagonal building with the beautiful marble dome, which houses his tomb, as well as those of his wife Roxelana and their children.
