Saint-Pierre Street
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Hyères, The City of Palm Trees
Saint-Pierre Street is a quiet lane that winds through the upper part of Hyères, connecting two of the city’s most beautiful green spaces: Sainte-Claire Park, a peaceful retreat just steps from the historic centre, and Saint-Bernard Park, located just below the famous Villa Noailles.
As you walk along, you’ll see the medieval castle rising above you on the left, perched at the top of the hill with sweeping views over Hyères and the Mediterranean coast. Speaking of views, just wait until you catch a glimpse of the sea and the sparkling bay dotted with the Îles d’Or, or Golden Islands. Their name comes from a local legend that adds a touch of magic to the scenery.
The story goes that a nobleman named Olblianus had four daughters, known for their beauty and their love of swimming in the crystal-clear waters off the beaches of Hyères. One day, the sisters ventured too far from shore and were suddenly threatened by a pirate ship. As the pirates drew closer, their father called out to them in panic, urging them to swim back. The girls gave it their all, but the danger was closing in.
In despair, Olblianus cried out to the heavens, begging for help. In that moment, a bright light shone down from the sky, and one by one, the girls began to turn to stone. The pirates, stunned by what they saw, fled in fear. The three eldest daughters, who had made it farther out to sea, became the islands of Porquerolles, Port-Cros, and the Île du Levant. The youngest, who had stayed closer to the shore, became the Giens Peninsula.
The beam of divine light is said to be what gave the islands their golden glow, and their name. Whether you believe the legend or not, it’s a beautiful story that adds a little wonder to this already breathtaking view. Now let’s keep going, this street will lead us straight to the castle!
