Saint-Paul Gate

08 porte saint paul poi grand

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Hyères, The City of Palm Trees

This is one of the original gateways into the medieval city. Built next to the Saint-Paul Collegiate Church, from which it takes its name, it’s also known as La Peñiscola, a nod to a coastal town in Spain that shares a similar look with Hyères, thanks to its seaside setting and fortifications. If you look closely, you’ll spot the word “Peñiscola” carved into the stone to the right of the entrance. The Saint-Paul Gate is a beautiful relic from the 14th century.

It was part of the city’s defensive walls and served as one of the main access points into medieval Hyères. Everything behind you, outside the gate, would have once been beyond the city’s fortified limits. Although it’s been restored and expanded several times over the centuries, the gate still features its original arched opening, topped with two upper levels and a small turret, all classic features of medieval architecture. As you pass through, you’re officially stepping into the historic heart of the city.

Don’t forget to look up, the bright blue-painted ceiling adds a surprising and charming touch to this already impressive structure. Before you walk through, take a quick detour to your left to enjoy the view from Place Saint-Paul, where you’ll also find a staircase leading down to a 19th-century washhouse.
