Saint-Paul Collegiate Church
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Hyères, The City of Palm Trees
Standing proudly behind you is one of Hyères’ most iconic landmarks: the Saint-Paul Collegiate Church. With its elegant Provençal Romanesque style, the church was built in the 12th century, and expanded with a Gothic nave in the 14th century.
It played a central role in medieval city life. Originally a simple parish church, it was elevated to collegiate status in 1572.
Today, it’s one of Hyères’ most important historic monuments. What really sets it apart is that it holds one of the largest collections of ex-votos in France. Inside, you’ll find 432 of these devotional offerings, small painted plaques that depict everyday scenes.
Ex-votos are tokens of thanks, left in churches by people who made a vow or received a blessing. They often reflect the life, faith, or story of the person who offered them, and each one is unique. Take your time to explore this moving collection, along with the church’s stunning stained glass windows and beautiful altarpieces.
