This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Hyères, The City of Palm Trees
In 1866, this building became a prestigious 80-room hotel, set in lush greenery and designed in an elegant neoclassical style.
But its story begins much earlier. Back in 1564, Catherine de’ Medici, mother of King Charles IX, ordered a residence to be built here after spending a few days in Hyères. The project was never completed, but the land remained Crown property for centuries and was used to grow orange trees and exotic plants.
At the time, it was little more than a country estate. In the early 19th century, a larger residence was built to welcome visitors, and by 1866, it was transformed into the grand palace you see today. It operated as a hotel until 1934, when the city acquired it. Today, standing proudly on Avenue de Belgique, the building is home to Hyères’ Tourist Office and the city’s Department of Culture and Heritage.
Throughout the year, you can step inside to see exhibitions hosted in this remarkable historic space.
