This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Hyères, The City of Palm Trees

You’re now walking through ruins that hold over a thousand years of history. Built in the 11th century by the Lords of Fos, the Castle of Hyères stands atop a rocky peak known as la colline du Casteou, a perfect strategic spot for watching over the surrounding lands and coastline.

The fortress was dismantled in 1620 by order of King Louis XIII. While only the ruins remain today, they still offer a striking glimpse into medieval military architecture. Back in its prime, this was one of the largest castles in Provence and hosted some major historical figures.

In the 13th century, Charles I of Anjou, Count of Provence, settled here and expanded the stronghold. Under his rule, Hyères grew into one of the most powerful cities in the region at the time. Later, the castle passed into the hands of the French crown, but it suffered heavy damage during the Wars of Religion.

To put an end to the conflict, the king ordered its full destruction in the 17th century. Fast-forward a hundred years, and Hyères was becoming a fashionable winter retreat for the aristocracy. The ruined castle became a popular stop for curious travellers, many of whom were fascinated by ancient ruins.

Famous names like Victor Hugo, George Sand, Alexandre Dumas, and Queen Victoria all travelled here, helping to boost Hyères’ growing reputation. Even today, the castle is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. It offers a trip back through history, and some of the best panoramic views in town. From here, you can take in the old city below, the sparkling Mediterranean beyond, and the Golden Islands on the horizon.

You’ll even spot the modernist Villa Noailles tucked into the hillside. So take your time wandering around. The ruins, the views, and the sense of history make this an unforgettable stop.
