The Natural History Museum

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Helsinki, A Scandinavian getaway
This beautiful building is Helsinki’s Natural History Museum. When it was first built in 1913, it was actually a Russian secondary school, designed and constructed by two Russian architects in an ornate and flamboyant style. After Finland’s independence in 1919, the building was repurposed as a Finnish cadet school, and a few years later, it became the city’s Natural History Museum. Today, it houses over 8 million specimens, making it the largest zoological collection in Finland. It’s a fascinating visit in the heart of the Kamppi district!
