Old Church of Helsinki

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Helsinki, A Scandinavian getaway
You’re now standing in front of the “Old Church of Helsinki.” As its name suggests, it’s the oldest church in the city centre! Built in 1826 on the grounds of a former cemetery, the church stands out with its crisp white-painted wood and “Engelian” style—featuring Doric columns and a striking central dome. Originally intended as a temporary structure while Helsinki’s cathedral was under construction, it quickly became a favourite among locals and Tsar Nicholas I, who ruled the country at the time. Thanks to its popularity, the church was never dismantled and remains here today, offering 1,200 seats and welcoming parishioners and visitors from all over the world.
