Katajanokka District

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Helsinki, A Scandinavian getaway
You’re now in the heart of Katajanokka, a small island just east of central Helsinki. It’s separated from the mainland by the Katajanokka Canal, which was dug between the 1830s and 1840s. In addition to the beautiful Russian Orthodox cathedral, this district is home to several major landmarks, such as the casino, the former naval barracks, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the old Nokka prison, and the former harbour—where you’re standing now. Katajanokka is filled with Art Nouveau architecture. The district was developed in the early 20th century, during Russian rule. On your left, you’ll see the marina, one of the island’s liveliest spots. Cruise ships depart from here for destinations like Stockholm and Tallinn, and a 40-metre-high Ferris wheel offers sweeping views over the Finnish capital. You’ll also find the Allas Sea Pool nearby—a popular year-round destination with open-air seawater, heated pools, and traditional Finnish saunas. It’s a favourite among both locals and visitors. This is the perfect place to immerse yourself in Finnish culture!
