Esplanade Park, or Esplanadi in Finnish, is one of Helsinki’s most beloved promenades. Founded in 1812, it connects the city centre to the harbour and is lined with elegant 19th-century buildings. As you stroll along the esplanade, you’ll come across several statues and memorials honouring key figures from Finnish history. Among them is a large statue of poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg, celebrated for his works that helped shape Finland’s national identity. One of his poems even became the country’s national anthem! But Runeberg isn’t just remembered for his words—his name also lives on in a popular dessert: the Runeberg tart, a small, jam-filled cake, a bit like a raspberry muffin. The original recipe was created by his wife, Frederika Runeberg, and it’s still a favorite among Finns today. A little further down the path, you’ll find a monument to another literary legend—Eino Leino, considered the greatest Finnish poet of his time and a pioneer of Finnish-language poetry. If you’re in the mood for a little shopping, the area around Esplanade Park is ideal. Charming boutiques line the buildings along the park, spilling into the nearby streets. Just steps from the harbour and the historic center, Esplanade Park is one of the capital’s most visited and vibrant spots—a perfect place for a walk, a picnic, or even a little retail therapy.
