This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Helsinki, A Scandinavian getaway

This stunning station is a masterpiece of Finnish Art Nouveau. Built between 1909 and 1919, it was designed to meet the needs of a booming capital. Helsinki’s population had grown from just 20,000 in the 1860s to nearly 95,000 by 1900. The small station originally built in 1862 could no longer meet the city’s needs. In 1895, a new project was launched to build a larger station, and architect Eliel Saarinen was chosen from 21 proposals to design it. However, his original plan was criticised by fellow architects, who found it outdated and too simplistic. This led Saarinen to completely revise his design. The station shifted from a romantic Finnish style to a more modern look, inspired by contemporary German architecture. Completed in 1919, Helsinki Central Station is considered one of the most beautiful railway stations in the world, and now welcomes nearly 250,000 passengers everyday. Built from concrete and steel, it was also one of Finland’s most advanced buildings when it opened. Its bold red granite façade, soaring 48-meter copper clock tower, and unmistakable Art Nouveau style make it an unmissable landmark. What really catches the eye are the four statues flanking the main entrance. Designed by Finnish sculptor Emil Wikström, these identical stone figures hold glowing orbs and have become beloved icons of the city. Known as the “Lantern Bearers,” they’re a favourite sight for locals and visitors alike. Located in the heart of Helsinki, the station is a piece of living history and a must-see for its remarkable architecture.
