On your right is Amos Rex, Helsinki’s museum of modern and contemporary art. The museum is housed in the Lasipalatsi, or “Glass Palace,” a striking Functionalist-style building from the 1930s. Originally built to host offices, shops, and restaurants, the Glass Palace became a cultural hub in 1988. It underwent a full renovation in 2018, and its underground level began hosting the Amos Rex Museum. In this underground museum, you’ll find innovative exhibition spaces and collections that were once part of the former Amos Anderson Museum. Amos Anderson was a Finnish parliamentarian and a passionate art collector. His museum was originally located elsewhere in the city, however, as the old museum became too run-down to function properly, it closed its doors and its collections were moved here — to a building that was built to host the 1940 Helsinki Olympics, which were cancelled due to the Second World War. Today, it’s beneath the busy streets of Helsinki that you can explore this exceptional world of art.
