The Palacio de Los Capitanes Generales

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Havana, The Tales of Habana Vieja and Habana Centro
The Palacio de Los Capitanes Generales is the most striking example of Cuban Baroque architecture, complimenting the square it overlooks. Built in 1776 on the ruins of a former church, the building is so well preserved that you’d hardly guess its age. Over the years, this grand residence has welcomed its share of powerful guests. For 107 years, it was the official home of Havana’s colonial governors. Later, it briefly housed American military administrators and Spanish captains, before becoming the presidential palace in the early 20th century. Since 1968, it has taken on a new role as the City Museum — but its historical significance is still very much alive. If you’re curious about Havana’s past, its elegant arcades will tell you everything you need to know. But before stepping inside, take a moment to look down: the cobblestones in front, along Tacón Street, are made of wood. According to legend, a certain Captain General and his wife were disturbed at night by the noise of carriages and footsteps. Hoping to impress the Captain, one of his aides had the stone paving replaced with wooden blocks to reduce the noise. Now that’s what you’d call going the extra mile.
