Plaza de San Francisco de Asís

Open and breezy in every sense, Plaza de San Francisco de Asís has served as a gateway to Havana’s Old Town since the 16th century. Back then, the city was just beginning to take shape, and Spanish galleons crossing between the Caribbean and Europe would dock nearby. Perfectly positioned on the waterfront, the square quickly became a hub of commerce. Crews would unload their cargo and stock up on fresh water before setting off again across the Atlantic. But not everyone was thrilled about the noise and activity. The recently settled clergy of monks, disturbed by the constant commotion, eventually moved their activities to what is now Plaza Vieja. Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the area underwent significant changes: the streets were paved, mansions were built, the basilica added a bell tower, and new buildings were constructed to house the Chamber of Commerce and the Customs Office. Today, the square remains one of Havana’s most popular spots — especially for cruise ship visitors. Among its highlights: the former basilica, now a concert hall for classical music; the Lion Fountain, donated in 1836 by the Count of Villanueva; and the life-sized bronze statue of El Caballero de París, a wandering street philosopher who became a beloved figure in 1950s Havana.
