José Miguel Gómez Monument

At the top of Avenida de los Presidentes stands the most striking monument along this central promenade — a grand marble tribute to José Miguel Gómez. A key figure in Cuba’s modern history, he became known for his relentless fight for Cuban independence from Spain. He took part in every major conflict: the Ten Years’ War from 1868 to 1878, and the War of Independence in 1895. Rising steadily through the military ranks, he became a colonel, then a brigadier general in 1896, and finally a major general in 1898. In September 1908, Gómez became the second president of the Republic of Cuba. His term ended in 1913, after the four years originally set, but it was overshadowed by accusations of corruption and political favoritism. His monument — a powerful tribute to the soldier and the statesman — was unveiled in 1936, fifteen years after his death. It features a semicircular colonnade, a three-and-a-half metre high bronze statue of Gómez, and bas-reliefs depicting pivotal moments from his life. The design was by an Italian architect, but most of the money came from ordinary Cubans, who pitched in through a public subscription of about 20 centavos each.
