Halles Sainte-Claire

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Grenoble, The Capital of the Alps
Now, onto gastronomy and local products! France is explored through the flavors of its various regions, and the Dauphiné is no exception when it comes to high-quality local products. Built on the site of the former Sainte-Claire convent, this beautiful covered market has been a listed building since 2007. Built in 1825, it was an immediate success and the modest market hall was quickly expanded and renovated in the 1990s. Be sure to taste the many cheeses of the region, such as the Bleu du Vercors Sassenage or the delicious Saint-Marcellin, as well as a dish called Raviole du Royan; it is stuffed with cheese and fresh herbs. Let yourself be surprised by the Murçon, a generous specialty from Isère, made with cooked sausage flavored with meadow cumin and served with steamed potatoes on the side. Let us not forget the most famous and comforting dish of the region, the iconic gratin dauphinois. Beware purists, the authentic version is made without cheese! Last but not least don’t miss out on the variations of the ultimate Grenoble star, the walnut! In oil, in wine, in mustard, but also in its sweet version, in tart, jam, candy, or even in the form of Gâteaux Dauphinois, a type of shortbread filled with walnuts. I’m sure you’ll agree that after cheese, potatoes and walnut shortbread, you’ll need something to help with digestion! Fear not…The Carthusian monks have crafted a skillful blend of 130 mountain herbs. The closely guarded recipe reveals a globally renowned liqueur, with an almost mystical aura. To be consumed in moderation, needless to say. But enough talk, I’ll leave you to your exploration and tastings.
