This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Grenoble, The Capital of the Alps
On your right, you can see the Archaeological Museum of Saint-Laurent. You might want to visit it today or later! The old Saint-Laurent church, constructed atop a Gallo-Roman necropolis from the 4th century, was secularised in 1983 to undergo transformation into an archaeological site and later, 3 years hence, into a museum. It all began in 1803 with Champollion, (yes, the very same person who deciphered the Rosetta stone and pierce the mystery of hieroglyphs) who revealed to the learned world the existence of a Merovingian crypt beneath the church of Saint-Laurent. The place was destroyed in 1846. Prosper Mérimée came to the rescue and the crypt was listed in 1850. The museum displays objects found during the archaeological excavations. More than 1500 burials have been discovered, spanning from the 4th to the 18th century. The site offers16 centuries of customs and traditions, free of charge!
