The Tavel House

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Geneva, The Little Big Capital
Just a few steps from the Old Arsenal and City Hall, the Tavel House stands out with its distinctive architecture, a rare example of medieval Swiss urban design.
You’re looking at the oldest private residence in Geneva. A home has stood right here, on this exact spot, since the 12th century. Originally owned by the Tavel family, the building was destroyed by fire in 1334 and later rebuilt as a fortified residence with two turrets, making it one of the finest homes in the city.
It’s no surprise that it was classified as a Historical Monument in 1923 and has become a true landmark of Geneva. Today, the Tavel House is home to the Museum of Urban History and Genevan Daily Life, offering visitors a glimpse into the traditions and everyday life of the city known as the Capital of Peace.
