This is the most famous square in Geneva—and also the oldest!
It once housed the Roman forum, if you can imagine it. During the Middle Ages, it became known as Place du Bourg-de-Four, and in the 16th century, it served as a place of refuge for Protestants fleeing religious persecution.
Today, it’s still one of the liveliest spots in the city, both by day and night. The buildings surrounding the square, dating from the 16th to the 18th century, now house all kinds of treasures—bookshops, art galleries, antique stores—and of course, plenty of cafés and restaurants with spacious terraces. Whether you’re here for culture, history, or just to enjoy the atmosphere, this square has something for everyone.
