Calvin College

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Geneva, The Little Big Capital
Previously known as the College of Geneva, this building was constructed in the 16th century, shortly after the city adopted the Reformation.
It officially opened its doors in 1559, featuring a Renaissance-style porch, and welcomed nearly 1,200 students at the time. This period marked a turning point for Geneva, which became one of the first cities to make public education compulsory for children of all social backgrounds—hence the need for a brand-new school building.
Today, the college is still active and welcomes around 800 students aged 15 to 19. After earning what the Swiss called a “certificat de maturité gymnasiale”—equivalent to a high school diploma—students could move on to university-level studies. It remains a historic and symbolic site, as it is the oldest college in Geneva.
