The Town Hall

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Gand, Flanders’ best-kept secret
As you approach this impressive building, don’t be surprised if you spot a few grains of rice or rose petals on the ground—it’s a common sight here. That’s because Ghent’s Town Hall, just on your right, is a popular spot for weddings. Its construction spanned four centuries, resulting in a fascinating mix of architectural styles. The façade you’re currently passing is a stunning example of Flamboyant Gothic. Just look at the elaborate detailing and the rows of statues depicting the Counts of Flanders, added in the early 1900s. Once you turn the corner, you’ll notice a dramatic shift. The building’s later sections were completed in the Renaissance style, with much cleaner lines. Inside, the Town Hall holds 51 rooms, including the Wedding Chapel, where many Ghent locals exchange their vows. It’s a building that’s as captivating inside as it is from the outside.
