The Patershol District

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Gand, Flanders’ best-kept secret
This is where Ghent’s medieval soul comes to life, just outside the castle gates. Welcome to Patershol—a city within the city. This charming district is like stepping back in time, with its narrow cobbled lanes and rows of medieval houses. Patershol was a residential area from the start, but its character changed depending on who lived here. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it was home to textile workers. Later on, it became a favourite of the bourgeoisie. For a while, it was the neighbourhood everyone admired, and wished they could live in. But things took a turn, and its streets were dotted with brothels and shady taverns, leading residents to turn their backs on the area, considering it disreputable. A city-led effort soon brought Patershol back to life, restoring its old-world charm while preserving its nostalgic character. Now lined with cafés, restaurants, and little boutiques, this former ugly duckling has blossomed into one of Ghent’s trendiest neighbourhoods.
