Campanile de Giotto’s Bell Tower

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Florence, A world of art
Construction of Giotto’s bell tower began in 1298, just two years after work started on the cathedral. Serving as the cathedral’s bell tower, it’s nearly 85 metres high, and takes its name from one of its first architects. This was Giotto, he designed the project and laid its foundations. After his death, a group of architects took over the project. They added Renaissance elements to the design — a popular style in Europe at the time, becoming a blend of Florentine Gothic and early Renaissance. The bell tower has colourful marble façades, complimenting those of the nearby cathedral and baptistery. There are more than 400 steps to the top, but the breathtaking views are truly worth it! On each side of the tower, you’ll see impressive life-size statues of sixteen prophets, and many other sculptures. All these details make this one of Italy’s most beautiful towers.
