Three Bells of Fira
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Fira, The Hilltop Jewel of Santorini
On your right, just a short walk away, the street leads to one of Santorini’s most iconic landmarks: the famous Three Bells of Fira. With their vivid blue dome, whitewashed walls, and bell tower topped with three bells, they perfectly capture the postcard image of the island. Officially known as the Catholic Church of the Dormition, it was built in 1757 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
But the story goes back even further: in the 17th century, small cave churches were carved into the cliff here before being lost to erosion. The present church was badly damaged in the 1956 earthquake, then carefully rebuilt. According to legend, the three bells were a gift from a shipowner who had been miraculously saved from a storm off Santorini. In gratitude, he donated them, and ever since they have rung out over the caldera as a symbol of faith and thanksgiving.
The church is still active today, and its feast day on August 15 draws many worshippers. But what truly makes this spot world-famous is the view. From here, you can take in the sweeping panorama of the caldera, the deep blue Aegean, the volcanic islets, and the white houses of Fira cascading down the cliffs. At sunset, the sight is simply unforgettable.
Make sure you come here at least once during your stay in Fira to experience one of the island’s most breathtaking views.
