This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Fira, The Hilltop Jewel of Santorini
Before you stretches one of Santorini’s most breathtaking views: the caldera, unfolding in all its dramatic beauty. It was born more than three and a half thousand years ago, when a cataclysmic eruption blew apart the heart of the island.
The land collapsed into the sea, leaving behind this vast water-filled crater. In the middle you can spot two dark islets, Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni—still-active volcanoes that have been slowly rising from the sea over the centuries. You can even reach them by boat from the old port and walk across their solidified lava fields.
Beyond, the Aegean stretches endlessly, its colors shifting with the changing light. The view is spectacular at any time of day, but at sunset it becomes truly magical: the sky glowing in shades of orange and pink, the cliffs blazing with light. Take a moment to soak it all in—this is one of the most unforgettable sights Santorini has to offer.
