Holy Metropolitan Church
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Fira, The Hilltop Jewel of Santorini
You are standing in front of the Holy Metropolitan Church of Ypapanti, the great Orthodox cathedral of Fira. Built in 1827 and dedicated to the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, it remains the island’s religious seat to this day. Its story was marked by tragedy when the 1956 earthquake caused heavy damage, but the cathedral was lovingly restored to its former glory. From the outside, it’s instantly recognizable with its large blue dome, gleaming white walls, and tall bell tower, while colorful mosaics brighten the façade.
Step inside and the atmosphere changes completely: marble floors, a vast dome, a gilded wall of icons, and monumental chandeliers create a space that feels both majestic and deeply solemn. Take a moment to admire the frescoes painted by local artist Christoforos Asimis, who spent seven years covering the walls with biblical scenes, crowned by his radiant Christ Pantocrator in the dome. His expressive, colorful style breathes new life into the Byzantine tradition, turning the cathedral into a living museum of sacred art.
And don’t miss the setting itself—step out onto the esplanade and you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the caldera and the volcanic islets, especially when the sun sets. Here, faith, art, and landscape come together to create one of Fira’s most unforgettable experiences.
