Jean Bart Square

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Dunkerque, The City of Jean Bart
Here we are in Jean Bart Square, yet another tribute to the city’s most famous hero. In the center of the square stands a striking bronze statue of Jean Bart himself — sword in hand, raised high toward the sky. It’s a powerful symbol of his determination to defend France against the Dutch and bring peace back to the country. The statue was created in 1845 by the renowned sculptor David d’Angers, who wanted to capture all the courage and spirit of this legendary figure. Jean Bart wasn’t just a brave privateer — after recovering goods stolen by the Dutch, he was ennobled by King Louis XIV and made commander of the Dunkirk navy. The statue’s inauguration was no small affair: it was unveiled during a festival that lasted two full days! Back then, this square was known as Royal Square — but today, it proudly bears the name of the man who helped shape the city’s history.
