Dunkirk Gables

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Dunkerque, The City of Jean Bart
You’re now in the Grand Large district, once home to the city’s shipyards. Today, it’s been transformed into a residential neighborhood famous for its distinctive triangular-shaped houses, nicknamed the “Gables.” These unique homes are inspired by the traditional architecture of nearby Flanders, in Belgium. They’re modern, striking, and give the area a very unique charm — especially considering that just a few decades ago, this space was completely abandoned. Love them or not, these bold homes have brought new life and housing to a part of Dunkirk that’s steeped in maritime history, where many ships were built during the 20th century.
