Blockhaus

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Dunkerque, The City of Jean Bart
Here stands a blockhaus — a World War II bunker made of reinforced concrete, designed to withstand attacks. These were built by the Germans across occupied France, especially along the Atlantic coast, to defend against potential Allied invasions. The one in front of you is just one of around 12,000 such bunkers built during the war. Many remain hidden among seaside homes and dunes, and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region has one of the highest concentrations of them in France. Though stark and imposing, these blockhauses are powerful reminders of one of history’s darkest chapters — and remain part of Dunkirk’s landscape and memory.
