The Lazarettos

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Dubrovnik, The pearl of the Adriatic
In the past, many merchants and travellers passed through Dubrovnik and stopped over at the Ploče district. This constant flow of people raised health concerns, and citizens grew worried about epidemics coming in from abroad. So in the 14th century, a quarantine zone was built, called the Lazarettos. Made of stone, these 8 buildings follow one another in a row. Transit passengers, along with their wagons, were quarantined here upon arrival from Eastern countries. This was one of the best organised Meditarranean quarantine sites in the 17th century, and saw more traveller stopovers than any other country in the region. The Lazarettos have been well preserved, and today they’re the site of leisure, shopping, and cultural activities.
