Fort Lovrijenac

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Dubrovnik, The pearl of the Adriatic
Fort Lovrijenac perches on a rock 37 metres above sea level, making it the highest point of Dubrovnik’s old town outside the city walls. Legend has it that in 1018, the people of Dubrovnik built this fortress in just three months in order to protect the city. Its strategic position offers clear views over the southern sea and the northwest road. From here, the city was defended against invasion, especially from Venetian fleets, desperate to take control of Croatia. Nicknamed “the Gibraltar of Dubrovnik,” you’ll find a Latin inscription above the entrance, which translates to: “Freedom is not to be sold for all the world’s treasures”. It’s a fitting tribute to the fortress’s role in Dubrovnik’s long fight for liberty. Today, the triangular structure stands empty most of the time, but it comes alive during summer with theatrical performances, guided tours, wedding ceremonies, and private events. Finally, we have to mention Game of Thrones. A large part of the series was filmed in Dubrovnik, and fans may recognise Fort Lovrijenac as the famous Red Keep!
