The Dubrovnik Cathedral

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Dubrovnik, The pearl of the Adriatic
Welcome to Dubrovnik Cathedral, one of the city’s main religious landmarks. Back in the 12th century, a Romanesque church stood here, funded by the English King, Richard the Lionheart. He wanted to build a church for the local citizens who saved his life after his ship sank on a nearby island called Lokrum. But nature had other plans… In 1667, a devastating earthquake struck Dubrovnik, destroying most of its architecture, including the church. Following the disaster, a group of Italian architects constructed a new Baroque cathedral between 1671 and 1713. Its most striking feature is the large dome… Standing out among the rooftops, it’s often one of the first things tourists point out in the Dubrovniks skyline. The Cathedral is free to visit, and holds remarkable historical treasures. It contains 182 reliquaries, including the skull, leg, and arm of Saint Blaise, the city’s patron saint.
